Biographical Synopsis: I would like you to research the poet. Find out a bit about the poet’s life and write a short synopsis (200 words minimum) of his or her biography (as it relates to the poem). You must cite a minimum of two sources in this section. Historical Context: In addition to the biographical synopsis I’d also like you to research the time period during which the poem was written or during which it was set. For example if in order to understand the poem one really needs to know about the AIDS crisis in the 1980s then research the AIDS crisis in the 1980s. If on the other hand there are no historical references in the poem but you know that the poem was written in the 16th Century research the 16th Century for information about the time period. Write a brief synopsis (200 words minimum) of the historical context. You must cite a minimum of two sources in this section (the two sources MUST be distinct from the two that you cited in the biography section). Analysis: Finally I’d like you to analyze the poem – offer an interpretation of the poem. Be sure to quote the poem itself to support your ideas. When citing lines of poetry include the line number or numbers in the parenthetical reference like so: In the first stanza of Frosts poem a traveler has come upon a crossroads which is described as "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood" (1). The traveler is "sorry he could not travel both / And be one traveler long he stood / And looked down one as far as he could / To where it bent in the undergrowth" (2-5). Notice also that some pronouns have been changed from the original work so that the lines could flow more smoothly with the students writing. Finally please include the following notation to show where the line originally ended: "/." Your analysis should be a minimum of 250 words. Please do not be tempted to steal ideas from literary critics. To squash the temptation just dont use any sources in this section. MLA: Don’t forget to use MLA when citing material that you found in an outside source. You will need to use parenthetical references each time that you cite information from an outside source (this includes when you are quoting paraphrasing and/or summarizing). A parenthetical reference contains the author’s last name and the page number where the information can be found: (Jenkins 7). For online sources include the authors last name (if known) or the first piece of information in the Works Cited page if the author is not known (this is usually the title): (Jenkins). At the end of your paper you will need to include a Works Cited page in which you record the bibliographical information for any sources cited in your paper. Information about MLA is included in the Week 10 module. Also be sure to introduce the source in a brief introductory phrase to signal to your reader that you are paraphrasing or quoting. You can use a phrase like According to so and so or So and so notes... Credible Sources: You are required to use at least one source from Valencias library databases (sources like GALE EBSCO ABC-CLIO etc.).. Make sure that all of your remaining sources are credible scholarly and relatively recent. Literature Resource Center Literature Reference Center Biography Resource Center are all good databases to start with. You may NOT use any wiki sites or blogs as a source for this assignment.
